Greek Language School
The philosophy of our Greek Language School Program is based on a desire to offer our parishioners, who have a longing to learn the Greek Language, a loving, caring and supportive environment that will nurture the desire to learn and excel in their study of the Greek Language.
Our talented group of volunteer instructors share a love and knowledge of the Greek Language and Hellenic Ideals, and have shown a desire to serve our Lord through the stewardship of teaching. These parishioners have graciously accepted the challenge of instilling in the minds and hearts of our youth, the spiritual, moral and cultural values of our Greek Orthodox heritage. It is our prayer that this comprehensive program will continue to help our children understand and appreciate the values and traditions underlying Greek Orthodoxy.
We make a concerted effort to gear the classes to each individual student, providing them with every opportunity to learn. We intend to accomplish this by monitoring the size of the classes and through the use of excellent materials and books. Please note that although these classes provide a great framework to place the students, each child is evaluated so that based on age and proficiency he/she is placed in the appropriate level. Because of this, levels may sometimes need to change or merge; the goal is to provide a comfortable yet workable and successful environment for the students.
Greek Language School Class Dates and Times
The Saint Barbara Greek Language School convenes each Thursday afternoon promptly at 4:30 p.m from September through May. Classes end at 6:30 p.m.
A Special Message To Parents
Learning a second language is not an easy task; made all the more difficult by having classes only meet once a week. This is why it is important for parents to make sure that their children are present promptly at 4:30 p.m. for the beginning of their class time. We also need to make sure that they arrive prepared and ready to learn.
As parents, we have a responsibility to make sure that our children take the time to review their lessons and complete their homework assignments each and every week. As instructors, we need to make sure that we teach the Greek Language with enthusiasm and provide every opportunity for our children to learn and experience the beauty of the Greek Language, Hellenic Culture and Orthodox Faith. Among other things, we will continue to implement the Saint Barbara computer lab into our lesson plans. We are very excited about this new tool which we hope to use to further inspire our students.
